John Schneiderman plays Napoleon Coste‘s (1805–1883) “La Zyderzee” on seven-string guitar. Coste was a French guitarist and composer who wrote everything from etudes to concert works. He had a particular interest in 7-string so this is very appropriate. Schneiderman plays all sorts of instruments and you can see in his technique he plays in a period style and with a period sound. This is more how I image this music to be realized. When played on a modern guitar the clarity, power, and sustain can certainly alter the sound and feel. It still translates well to modern instruments but I feel 19th Cen. guitars better capture the balance, texture, and charm of the music.
