Ricercare No.7 by Milano (Lesson, PDF)

Ricercare (Fantasia) 7 by Francesco Canova da Milano (1497–1543). This comes from my Classical Guitar Repertoire Lessons Grade 5 book. Five pieces at the grade 5 level with dedicated lessons preparing you for each piece.

This lesson in the book covers sustain and voice independence. I also talk about the Ricercare and melodic imitation. Francesco Canova da Milano was an Italian lutenist and composer. He was praised throughout Europe as the foremost lute composer of his time. More of his music is preserved than of any other lutenist of the period. Francesco da Milano left a large quantity of lute music, including fantasias, ricercari and transcriptions of vocal compositions by leading composers of the time. His contemporaries called him “Il Divino”.

Numbering: Ness No. 7 (Arthur Ness, The Lute Music of Francesco Canova Da Milano, Harvard University Press, 1970).
