Classical guitarist Xuefei Yang gives two lessons on orchestration on guitar, that is, a mix of imitating other instruments, phrasing, timbre (colouration), and articulation. I like these small subject-oriented lessons from Xuefei Yang’s YouTube channel. The above video is on the cello-like melody from Prelude No.1 by Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) and the below video on the orchestral nature of Introduction and Variations on a Theme from the Magic Flute by Mozart, Op. 9 by Fernando Sor (1778 – 1839). It’s nice to hear musicians talk about the music as they play, it offers context and listening skills for students rather than ‘where to put you fingers’ style.
