Giulio Tampalini performs Fantaisie Hongroise (Hungarian Fantasy) from Trois Morceaux op. 65 (1857) by Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856). This comes via his YouTube channel. Tampalini’s playing is a stormy mix of extroverted displays with huge contrasts to dynamics, accents, sweet and aggressive phrasing. Just compare the opening to the softer section at 3:22. These contrasts make sense in Mertz but many artists sacrifice them for a cleaner, polished sound. Tampalini makes more of it which results in an exciting performance.
