An Malvina by Mertz (PDF, Lesson)

An Malvina by Mertz - PDF sheet music or tab for classical guitar.

An Malvina by Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856). From Bardenklänge, Op.13, Héft 1, No.1. PDF sheet music for classical guitar and a free performance and lesson video. Includes both a notation-only edition and tab edition. The level is late-intermediate to advanced (grade 7-8).

This lovely work from Mertz’s Bardenklänge (Bardic Sounds). Mertz was very influenced by the great composer of his day and particularly Liszt, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Schumann. In this work I really hear the lieder of Schubert with a strong melody and similarity in texture to the Schubert arrangements he also made. It’s amazing how well this work technically sits on the guitar while also being quite full and rich sounding. Video Lesson Link.

I also made the below separate lesson on creating technique exercises from repertoire using this work as an example.
